Getting started in gardening doesn’t have to be overwhelming—it begins with a single pot, a patch of soil, or even a sunny windowsill. Start small, choose a few plants that excite you, and let curiosity guide you. As Noelle Johnson, the AZ Plant Lady, says, “Gardening is a journey, not a destination—start with what you can manage and grow from there.” Renowned garden writer Tovah Martin reminds us that “Gardening is an act of hope. You plant something today because you believe in tomorrow.” With each seed you sow, you're not just growing plants—you’re cultivating joy, patience, and connection to the earth.Â
This is the season to get started!
    Vegetables:
   Herbs:
    Flowers:
These herbs love the cooler temps and get more flavorful as the weather cools:
Cilantro – Thrives in fall and won’t bolt like in summer.
Parsley – Grows slowly at first, then flourishes through winter.
Chives – Hardy and flavorful, great in containers or borders.
Thyme – A cold-tolerant perennial, perfect for fall planting.
Sage – Enjoys the cooler weather and enhances holiday cooking.
Oregano – Can be planted now and will overwinter well in milder climates.
These veggies love fall’s milder temps and often taste sweeter:
Lettuce (All types) – Quick-growing and perfect for salad mixes.
Spinach – Sweetens in cooler weather, very cold-hardy.
Kale – A fall superstar—gets sweeter after a light frost.
Broccoli – Plant in early fall for harvest before winter.
Cauliflower – Needs a head start; plant by October in most zones.
Carrots – Sow directly into soil; they love fall and taste sweeter.
Beets – Grow well in fall and have edible greens too.
Radishes – Quick and fun—harvest in as little as 25 days.
Green Onions – Easy to grow and great for fall soups.
Pansies – Cool-season color champs; bloom into early spring.
Violas – Smaller cousins to pansies, just as hardy and colorful.
Snapdragons – Best planted in fall for robust spring blooms.
Calendula – Bright, cheerful, and edible—loves cool weather.
Sweet Alyssum – Fragrant and low-growing, great for borders.
Dusty Miller – Adds texture and silvery foliage through winter.
This is that time of year for maintenance. Again depending on your climate on what best to do to protect your flowers, plants and vegis/ herbs.
Think of your garden as an experiment in joy," Noelle says. "It's okay to make mistakes. Every plant teaches you something."
Noelle Johnson, widely known as the AZ Plant Lady, is a horticulturist, landscape designer, and author who specializes in creating beautiful, low-maintenance gardens in the desert Southwest. With a background in sustainable landscaping and years of hands-on experience, Noelle has become a trusted voice for gardeners navigating arid climates.
She’s passionate about teaching others how to grow thriving, water-wise gardens that are both functional and full of life. Through her books, speaking engagements, and online platforms, she empowers everyday people to connect with their outdoor spaces—no matter their level of experience.
In our interview, Noelle and I dove deep into gardening basics, including soil and watering and how even the harshest climates can be transformed into lush, inviting retreats.
She shared her philosophy that gardening isn’t about perfection—it’s about intention, joy, and working with nature instead of against it. We laughed about some of our early planting mistakes and bonded over our shared love for creating meaningful outdoor spaces. Her wisdom is rooted in practicality and heart, making our conversation as educational as it was inspiring.

Designing a garden, is such an integral part of making a home feel like yours. Garden design has always been one of my greatest joys.
There’s something incredibly rewarding about transforming an empty space into a living, breathing extension of your home. I see gardens not just as pretty backdrops, but as soul-nourishing spaces that welcome, soothe, and inspire. From the moment you step into the front yard to the peaceful nooks tucked into the backyard, every element should reflect beauty, balance, and intention.
My garden became my passion project. I personally selected every plant, every paver, every curve of gravel, pouring over textures, colors, and the way the sunlight would filter through the leaves. I handpicked my rose varieties for their scent and bloom, planted herbs and vegetables I love to cook with, and chose flowering and shade trees that would grow with my family and provide sanctuary over time.Â
Every decision was made with care and a vision for a timeless, livable landscape that feels like an extension of who I am.
Now, each day, I walk through these spaces knowing they’re a labor of love—crafted with intention and joy. Every plant has a purpose, whether it’s to attract pollinators, provide food, create shade, or simply spark a smile. My garden isn’t just something I built—it’s something I live in and bring friends and family to often. It’s where I feel grounded, creative, and connected to nature. And that’s what makes it truly special. I hope that this piece will inspire others to just get out there and start making your outdoor living space yours by intention.Â
Tovah Martin Reminds us that gardening isn't just about growing plants. It's about growing YOU! Tending a garden teaches patience, presence, and the art of letting go. It grounds you in the now and offers quiet companionship in seasons of both joy and hardship.
"The garden accepts you for exactly who you are," Tovah says. "It never asks you to be anything else."
For anyone moving through a transition, a loss, or simply the noise of everyday life, gardening can offer a deep emotional release and renewal. It asks you to slow down. To listen. To feel again.
You don't need a plan or perfect Pinterest -perfect layout. Start with what you love. A pot of herbs, a tray of wildflowers, a tomato or pepper plant or herbs on your patio or windowsill. Let it be imperfect. Let it be yours.
Watch the episode as we sit down with special guest Tovah Martin, a soulful gem. I absolutely love her take on how the garden heals from within and you will too.
